FINAL SCORE: Pleasanton RAGE 1, San Juan SC 2

Stanford Medicine Sports Complex: In their second meeting this week, RAGE lost a close match against San Juan. The teams seemed evenly matched for most of the game, but a late goal in the 83rd minute allowed San Juan to squeeze ahead. Both teams played physically, and Ava Steven and two San Juan center backs received yellow cards. Marta Pelegrin earned Player of the Match, having several close shots on goal throughout the night.

COACH’S QUOTE:

“Much better performance than Saturday,” Sarah Fawcett said. “The result wasn’t what we wanted, but the response, intensity, and belief were exactly what we needed. We know what we’re capable of — now let’s take that into Saturday and go upset the NorCal Division.”

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Half:

    • 2:45 – RAGE earned their first corner of the night, taken by Pelegrin.
    • Both teams struggled to settle the ball in the beginning of the match, leading to a lot of action in the middle of the field through the 10th minute.
    • RAGE entered a period of offensive control for the next several minutes. They recorded three shots by Pelegrin, with great passing from Grace Sykes and Lauren Collier.
    • 18:20 – Sydney Head made her first save of the night.
    • RAGE continued to control the ball during this period with 2 corners and a very close shot by Maylen Montoya in the 26th minute.
    • 41:21 – RAGE goal! Addison Posey headed the ball off of a pass from Sykes, leading to a RAGE lead.
    • 46:30 – San Juan answered with a penalty-kick goal right at the end of the half.

RAGE went into the second half tied with San Juan after a goal by Posey and a PK by San Juan. Both teams had trouble settling the ball early on, but RAGE was able to find long possessions and multiple goal scoring opportunities by around the 20th minute. RAGE also faced an injury, forcing them to shake up their back line late in the half.

Second Half:

    • 50:40 – San Juan earned their first corner of the match.
    • 52:45 – Pelegrin created a great scoring opportunity on a breakaway, but missed her shot, hitting the right goalpost.
    • The middle of the half unfolded similarly to the second half of the first in terms of split possession, but San Juan earned several more scoring opportunities.
    • 82:30 – San Juan goal from outside of the 18-yard box.
    • 83:20 – Maylen Montoya fired back with a shot that was blocked by San Juan defense.
    • RAGE was unable to get a clear shot off for the remainder of the match.

While both teams held possession of the ball for long periods of this half, San Juan was able to get the majority of shot attempts and time within the goal box. This match marks RAGE’s last home game of the season.
