FINAL SCORE: Pleasanton RAGE 2, Stockton Cargo 1

Stanford Medicine Sports Complex: RAGE beat Cargo in their second meeting this year, moving ahead of them in NorCal Division rankings, and moving into 4th place. RAGE was ahead from the 12th minute onwards, but faced a competitive opponent, with both teams earning many shot attempts. Sydney Head earned Player of the Match after several outstanding plays in the second half, including a penalty kick save.

COACH’S QUOTE:

“To be on a three-game winning streak is something this group should be incredibly proud of,” Sarah Fawcett said. I cannot say enough about the commitment, belief, and work ethic this team has shown. We were clinical in the right moments and showed the quality needed to get the result. Having Sophia Minnite back in the squad was fantastic — she brought great organization and leadership, and you could feel her impact immediately. This team continues to grow, and we are excited to keep building.”

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Half:

    • 1:22 – Cargo recorded the first corner of the night, which was headed out by RAGE defense.
    • 3:32 – RAGE kicked the first of several shots that hit the inside crossbar, taken by Addison Posey.
    • RAGE earned several more close shots in the following minutes from Marta Pelegrin, Ashleigh Carroll, and Maylen Montoya. They also won a corner in the 7th minute.
    • 12:00 – RAGE goal from outside of the box by Montoya!
    • 19:45 – RAGE got another scoring opportunity after Pelegrin earned a free kick just outside of the box. The play created 3 consecutive corners, generating close shots by Jenna McDonnell and Addison Posey.
    • RAGE began several breakaway plays in the following 10 minutes, but drew repeated offsides calls, keeping the ball in the middle of the field.
    • 41:57 – Cargo earned its first close shot on goal, saved by Head.

RAGE completely controlled possession for the majority of this half, creating numerous scoring opportunities. Despite introducing several new players to the roster, the team did a great job of communicating and passing the ball upfield. At the end of the second half, Cargo had found their footing and began playing at RAGE’s level. However, an early goal by Montoya kept RAGE in the lead going into the second half.

Second Half:

    • 47:38 – RAGE goal!! Posey won the team’s second goal of the night on a breakaway with Pelegrin. Posey kicked a ball that hit the crossbar, and scored on her own rebound.
    • 49:00 – Cargo fired back with a corner, but was unable to generate a shot.
    • Cargo earned 2 more corners beginning in the 51st minute, forcing 2 very good saves by Head. Head had two more big saves in the 60th minute.
    • 68:50 – Cargo goal
    • 69:55 – Posey fired back with a close shot from outside the box.
    • Cargo continued to control the majority of possession, with RAGE having short breakaways, creating shots by Grace Sykes and Nicole Kim.
    • 85:27 – Cargo earned a penalty kick. Their kicker had a great shot, which was deflected by Head, who had another save right afterwards. This is Head’s second PK save of the season.
    • 87:03 – Cargo shot a goal on an offside play, which was quickly disallowed.

Each team controlled possession of the ball for one half of the match, but RAGE was able to play tighter defense and squeeze out a goal early in the second half. Both teams played physically and drew a higher than average number of offsides calls. With this win, RAGE is now on a 3 game winning streak going into their match against San Juan SC.
